COMMON APPLICATION FOR YANCEY COUNTY SCHOLARSHIPS

1. Please
place a check mark beside the scholarships for which you are applying.
Read the criteria carefully and check all that apply to you.
2. Completed
applications must be turned in to Suzanne Gavenus no later than
March 7, 2008. Only those applications that are completed and
turned in on time will be eligible for consideration.
3. When asking
a teacher to complete a recommendation form, you should give them
2 weeks to do so, have a resume ready should they ask for one,
and tell them (in writing, preferably) the date that the recommendation
is due.
4. Do NOT
stop pursuing other scholarship sources! Check with your church,
yours or your parents’ employers, the financial aid office
of the school you will be attending, the scholarship bulletin
board, senior newsletter and scholarship websites.
5. Scholarships
will be awarded this spring at the Evening of Excellence. Remember,
if chosen for a scholarship, it is good form to send a thank you
note to the organization granting the scholarship.
6. Also if
chosen for a scholarship, you and your parent/guardian will be
asked to sign a letter of acceptance of the scholarship and you
will be expected to inform your college’s financial aid
office of the scholarship.
___BURNSVILLE
MEN’S CLUB— $500-$1000 scholarship for students who
demonstrate strong financial need and achievement who will be
attending either a 2- or 4-year college
___CALLIE RANDOLPH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--$1000 scholarship for
a student pursuing a degree in education or science and who demonstrates
financial need
___CHAMBER OF COMMERCE—two $1000 scholarships open to all
students who demonstrate leadership and achievement and are planning
to attend college
___EARL HONEYCUTT MEMORIAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP--$500-$1000 for
a student planning to attend a 4-year university and $250-$500
for a student planning to attend a 2-year community college to
pursue a career in the field of science
___EDGAR HUNTER SCHOLARSHIP--$1000 scholarship for a student pursuing
a degree in science or math
___ELISHA HONEYCUTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--$300-$500 for a student
who plans to attend Mayland Community College, Mars Hill College,
Carson-Newman or Brevard
___ FACS SENIOR STUDENT - YANCEY COUNTY EXTENSION AND COMMUNITY
ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP--$250. Must be nominated by FACS department
with preference given to a student who is pursuing a career in
family and consumer science, early childhood education, culinary
arts, interiors and design, etc.
___GLEN RAVEN SCHOLARHSHIP—$1000 & $500 for 4 year college
and $500 for 2 year vocational/technical college. For a student
whose parent works at Glen Raven Mills.
___ JANE ROBINSON HONORARY SCHOLARSHIP – $1000 for a graduating
senior who will be pursuing a degree in education with the intent
to come back to Yancey County to teach. Applicant must demonstrate
academic achievement and financial need.
___KATE ZUVER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--$500 for a student who plans
to pursue a teaching career
___ LEON TAYLOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP YANCEY COUNTY SOIL AND WATER
CONSERVATION--$500 for a student who is pursuing a degree in an
agriculture-related career
___MOUNTAIN AIR PILOTS’ ASSOCIATION and CAL AND CAROL PEDDY
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP —$500 - $1000 open to any high-achieving
senior planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college.
___MOUNTAIN HERITAGE BOOSTERS CLUB--$500 for a male and $500 for
a female who have participated in athletics
___MOUTAIN HERITAGE FFA SCHOLARSHIP-- $500 Senior must be an active
FFA member for 2 years continuously, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
and be planning to attend a 2 year or 4 year college/university
to major (or minor) in an Agricultural, Natural Resource or Science
related field
___PORTER ROBINSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--$500 scholarship for
a student who is pursuing a career in law enforcement or any area
relating to the law
___RANDY THOMAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--$500 scholarship for a senior
student(s) who deserves recognition for their academic efforts
and/or demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to
children of friends/family members of Randy Thomas.
___ ROTARY CLUB OF BURNSVILLE SCHOLARSHIP FOR MHHS SENIORS-- $500
- $1000 to one or more seniors who plan to go to college and use
their education to improve the lives of the people of Yancey County.
___SKILLS USA SCHOLARSHIP—$250 for a student who has completed
either the drafting, auto technology or construction technology
curriculum and is planning to attend college
___WILLIAM CECIL SHAW MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP--$500-$1000
for a student who has completed the health sciences career path
and plans to pursue a degree in the medical field. Preference
will be given to those seeking a nursing degree. See Ms. Hardin
for additional essay question.
___ WOMEN HELPING OTHER WOMEN (WHOW) SCHOLARSHIP – Amount
varies for a student wishing to attend college but who could not
otherwise go without the financial assistance of this scholarship.
___YANCEY COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR HONORS
SCHOLARSHIP-- $500 for a student who plans to pursue a teaching
career
___YANCEY COUNTY BUS DRIVERS—LISA HANEY SCHOLARHSIP—$500
for a student who has ridden the bus through at least 11th grade
and demonstrates financial need and achievement
___YANCEY COUNTY FOOD SERVICE WORKERS TRACY EDWARDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--
$500 for a student who demonstrates achievement and financial
need
___ YANCEY COUNTY SERVICE AWARD SCHOLARSHIP - $250-$500 for a
student who has gone above and beyond in community service
___YANCEY-MITCHELL REALTORS ASSOCIATION--$500 for a student who
plans to attend Mayland Community College
